What is an AEO audit?

An AEO audit reviews how well your pages give direct, quotable answers. It checks whether your headings match real questions, whether a short answer follows each one, whether lists and tables make the content easy to extract, and whether your FAQ markup matches the text visitors can read. AEO stands for answer engine optimization.

Answer engines include featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants and AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. They do not read a page the way a person does. They look for a clear question and a clean answer they can lift out. Every Ranklyst audit also runs an AI visibility checker test, so you can see whether those assistants cite you in practice.

WHAT WE CHECK

Four things an AEO audit looks at on every page

Ranklyst reviews up to 12 of your most important pages as part of about 30 measurable checks, so the same pages get the same score every time.

Question-style headings

People search in questions, and answer engines match questions to headings. A heading that names the question makes the match easy.

  • How many headings read as real questions
  • Vague headings such as “Overview”
  • One clear topic for each section

Direct answers

A good answer comes first, in a few plain sentences, before any background. Long introductions push the answer out of reach.

  • Whether a short answer follows each question
  • Answers buried below long intros
  • Answers that make sense on their own

Lists, tables and page sections

Steps belong in lists and comparisons belong in tables. This format is easy for readers to scan and for machines to extract.

  • Steps written as numbered lists
  • Comparisons written as tables
  • Clear sections with a logical heading order

FAQ structured data

FAQ markup describes questions and answers in a format machines read without guessing. It only helps when it matches the page.

  • Whether FAQ markup is present
  • Markup that matches the visible text
  • Pages where an FAQ block fits naturally
THE ANSWER-FIRST METHOD

What a direct answer looks like, before and after

Most weak answers share one problem: they talk around the question. Here is the same section written two ways.

Before: heading and answer do not match

Understanding canonical tags

Canonical tags are something many website owners have heard about, and they play a role in modern SEO. People hold many opinions about how they work, and the topic can get technical, so it helps to learn some background first.

Why it fails: it names no question and gives no answer.

After: question heading, then a direct answer

What is a canonical tag?

A canonical tag is a line of HTML that tells search engines which URL is the main version of a page. When several URLs show the same content, the canonical tag tells Google which one to index, so ranking signals do not split across duplicates.

Why it works: 45 words, complete on its own, and ready to quote. The depth follows below it.

Practitioner tip: read your answer aloud with the heading hidden. If a listener cannot tell what question you answered, rewrite the first sentence so it repeats the key words of the question.

    Ranklyst measures your answer readiness

Ranklyst reviews up to 12 of your most important pages and checks question-style headings, direct answers, lists, tables, page sections and FAQ markup as part of about 30 measurable checks.

  3. 3

Read your AEO score and fix the top issues

Receive your AEO score out of 10, the reasons behind it, a prioritized fix list, a PDF and a share link, usually within a few minutes.

DO IT YOURSELF

How to do an AEO audit step by step

You can run this process by hand. It works, and it takes time. Use it as a map, whether you use a tool or not.

  1. 1

List the questions your customers really ask

Pull them from support emails, sales calls, People Also Ask boxes and Google’s search suggestions. Real questions beat guesses, and 10 good ones are enough to start.

  2. 2

Match each question to one page

Give every question a single best home. If two pages try to answer the same question, they compete with each other and neither one reads as the clear source.

  3. 3

Turn the heading into the question

Replace vague headings such as “Overview” or “Our approach” with the question in plain words, for example “How long does a website migration take?”

  4. 4

Put a direct answer right under the heading

Write the answer in 40 to 60 words before you add any background. A reader, a snippet and an AI assistant should all be able to use this block on its own.

  5. 5

    Add depth below the answer

After the short answer, add the steps, the exceptions, a list or a table, and one real example. The short answer earns the quote and the depth earns the trust.

  6. 6

Add FAQ markup only for visible questions

If your page shows questions and answers to visitors, mark up exactly that text. Never mark up content that people cannot see on the page.

  7. 7

Check the result, then check again

Search your target questions and note who earns the snippet or the AI answer. Run your audit again after the changes to confirm that each fix worked.

Find your question searches in Google Search Console. Open the Performance report, add a Query filter, choose “Custom (regex)” and paste this pattern:

^(what|how|why|when|can|does|is|are|should)\b

The list shows question-style searches that already bring you impressions. These pages are your best AEO candidates.

Ranklyst measures the structure side of steps 3 to 6 across up to 12 pages and ranks the results. Steps 1, 2 and 7 still need your judgment, because only you know which questions your customers ask.

AEO CHECKLIST

A 12-point AEO checklist you can use today

Keep this list next to your audit report. If a key page passes every line, it is in good shape to be quoted.

  • Each key page targets one clear question
  • Headings are written as real questions
  • A direct answer follows each question heading
  • Answers run about 40 to 60 words
  • Each answer makes sense without the rest of the page
  • Steps appear as numbered lists
  • Comparisons appear as tables
  • Facts, prices and dates are current
  • FAQ markup matches the visible questions
  • Only questions people really ask are included
  • Author, About and contact details are easy to find
  • robots.txt does not block pages you want quoted
WHERE ANSWERS APPEAR

Four places your answers can show up, and how to check each

One well-built answer can serve several surfaces. Each surface rewards slightly different things.

Answer surfaces, what each one needs and how to check it
SurfaceWhat it needs from your pageHow to check it
Featured snippetsA page that already ranks well, plus a short answer directly under a matching headingSearch your target question and see which page earns the box
People Also AskRelated questions answered on the same page, each under its own headingExpand the box for your topic and note which questions appear
AI Overviews and AI assistantsClear, current, trustworthy answers on pages that crawlers can readAsk the question in each assistant and see which sources appear
Voice assistantsOne short, direct answer under a clear question headingAsk the question aloud on your phone and listen to the reply

Swipe sideways to see every column

Answers only reach AI assistants if crawlers can read your pages. Use the AI crawler access checker to see whether your robots.txt file lets them in. No audit can promise that any engine will pick your answer, because each engine makes its own choice.

COMMON MISTAKES

Six AEO mistakes that keep good pages from being quoted

These mistakes show up again and again, even on well-written sites.

Burying the answer under a long intro

Writers warm up for 150 words before they answer. Machines and busy readers leave first. Lead with the answer, then explain.

Writing question headings with vague answers

A good heading cannot rescue a weak paragraph. If the answer says “it depends” and stops, add the deciding factors right there.

Marking up FAQs that visitors cannot see

Markup must match visible text. Hidden or different answers break the match and can cost you trust with search engines.

Stuffing a page with dozens of questions

A long wall of thin Q&As reads as filler. Choose the questions your customers actually ask and answer each one well.

Skipping the SEO basics

A page that search engines cannot crawl or index rarely becomes the answer. Run an SEO audit first if you have not checked indexing and titles.

Leaving old facts in place

Prices, dates and rules change. A confident answer with an outdated number damages trust, so review answers on a schedule.

WHO IT HELPS

Where an AEO audit pays off fastest

Any site that answers questions can benefit. These four types usually see the clearest gaps.

Blogs and publishers

Turn how-to posts into question headings with short answers on top, followed by the full steps.

SaaS and documentation

Give each feature page a plain answer to “What does this do?” and “How do I set it up?”

Local and service businesses

Answer cost, timing and process questions directly. These are the questions that decide who gets the call.

Ecommerce and category pages

Add comparison tables and short buying answers, such as “Which size should I choose?”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

AEO audit questions answered

Clear answers before you run your first audit, in English, Spanish and Roman Urdu.

What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring your content so search engines and AI assistants can lift a clear answer from it. It covers featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice answers and AI-generated summaries.

What is an AEO audit?

An AEO audit reviews how well your pages give direct, quotable answers. It checks whether your headings match real questions, whether a short answer follows each one, whether lists and tables make the content easy to extract, and whether FAQ markup matches what visitors can read.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO helps a page rank. AEO helps a passage from that page become the answer. The two overlap heavily, because a crawlable, clear and trustworthy page gives you the best base for both. Fix your SEO basics first, then improve how your pages answer questions.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO focuses on answers pulled from your pages, such as snippets and voice replies. GEO focuses on whether AI systems recognize your brand and use your pages as a source. Ranklyst reports on both in one audit.

How do I do an AEO audit step by step?

List the questions your customers ask, match each one to a single page, turn the heading into the question, put a 40 to 60 word answer directly under it, add depth below, mark up visible FAQs, and then re-check. Ranklyst measures the structure side of this across up to 12 pages.

What does a Ranklyst AEO audit check?

Ranklyst looks at question-style headings with direct answers, lists, tables and clear page sections, and FAQ structured data where it fits. These checks sit inside the same audit as your SEO and GEO checks, across up to 12 of your most important pages.

How long should a direct answer be?

A practical rule of thumb is 40 to 60 words. That is long enough to be complete and short enough to be lifted whole. It is not an official rule, and no search engine promises to use a passage of that length.

How do I win a featured snippet?

Pick a question you already rank for on page one, put it in a heading, answer it in about 40 to 60 words directly beneath, and add a list or table when the answer has steps or comparisons. Google chooses snippets automatically, so no page can guarantee one.

Does FAQ schema still help?

Google now shows FAQ rich results for only a small set of sites, so do not add FAQ markup for that reason. It still describes your questions and answers clearly to machines and costs little to add. The rule that matters is that the markup must match the visible text.

Can I get my site into Google AI Overviews?

No one can guarantee it. AI answers tend to draw on pages that already do well in search, so start with strong SEO, then make your answers clear and easy to quote. Also check that your robots.txt file does not block crawlers you want.

Does voice search matter for AEO?

Voice assistants usually read out one short answer, so a concise, direct answer under a clear question heading helps. Treat voice as a side benefit of good answer structure, not as a separate project.

Is there a free AEO audit?

You can check by hand. Search your target questions to see who earns the snippet, and use Google Search Console to find the question-style searches that already bring you impressions. Ranklyst costs $2 once and checks the structure of up to 12 pages for you.

How much does an AEO audit cost?

A Ranklyst audit costs $2 per website, one time, with no subscription. The same report also includes your SEO and GEO scores and an AI visibility test.

What is a good AEO score?

Treat your first score as a starting point. The reasons behind it matter more than the number. Fix the top issues, run the audit again, and compare the two scores to see real progress.

How long does AEO take to work?

It varies. Search engines must recrawl your pages first, and snippets and AI answers change often. Run the audit again after your changes to confirm the fixes, then watch Google Search Console over the following weeks.

Do small businesses need AEO?

Yes, if customers ask questions before they buy. Local and service businesses often win by answering specific questions well, such as costs, timing and how a process works.

Will AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO. If a page cannot be crawled, indexed and trusted, it rarely becomes the answer. Think of AEO as the next layer on top of a healthy SEO foundation.

How often should I run an AEO audit?

Run one after you publish or update important pages, and every few months after that. Answers go stale, so facts, prices and dates need regular checks.

Can agencies and freelancers use Ranklyst for client sites?

Yes. Each audit gives you a PDF report and a share link you can send to clients, which makes it a quick starting point for a review or a pitch.

AEO audit kya hai?

AEO audit yeh check karta hai ke aapke pages search engines aur AI assistants ko seedhe, quote karne ke qabil jawab dete hain ya nahi. Is mein dekha jata hai ke headings asal sawalon jaisi hain, har sawal ke neeche chhota aur saaf jawab hai, lists aur tables parhna asaan banate hain, aur FAQ markup wohi likha hai jo visitor ko page par nazar aata hai. Ranklyst ye checks 12 pages tak sirf $2 mein kar deta hai.
