What is a GEO audit?

A GEO audit checks how well your website is prepared for generative AI systems. It reviews the signals that help an AI identify your brand, the trust signals that make your pages worth using as a source, and whether AI crawlers can read your site at all. It also tests what AI assistants actually say about you. GEO stands for generative engine optimization.

Generative engines write answers instead of listing links, and they name only a few sources. If an assistant cannot read, recognize or trust your site, it names someone else. Every Ranklyst audit includes this check as part of its AI visibility checker, so you see both your site signals and the real answers.

THE FRAMEWORK

Three questions every AI system asks about your website

You can organize all GEO work around three plain questions. If your site answers all three well, you have done most of what is in your control.

Who are you?

An AI system has to recognize your brand before it can describe or recommend it. Clear identity signals remove the guesswork.

  • One consistent name and description
  • Organization structured data
  • Links to your official profiles

Can I trust you?

Assistants lean on sources that look accountable. Real people, real contact details and a clear purpose all help.

  • About and contact pages
  • Named authors with short bios
  • Current facts, prices and dates

Can I read you?

The best signals do nothing if crawlers cannot reach your pages. Access is the first gate, and many sites fail it by accident.

  • robots.txt rules for AI crawlers
  • Pages that load without a login
  • Security settings that do not block bots
GEO VS SEO VS AEO

How GEO fits with SEO and AEO

The three layers build on each other. Each one asks a different question and has a different first fix.

Comparison of SEO, AEO and GEO
LayerThe question it asksExample first fix
SEO auditCan search engines find and rank my pages?Remove a stray noindex tag
AEO auditCan a passage on my page be quoted as the answer?Put a direct answer under a question heading
GEO auditDo AI systems know who I am and trust my pages as a source?Add Organization markup and let AI crawlers in

Work in this order: make pages findable with SEO, make answers quotable with AEO, then make your brand recognizable and trusted with GEO.

WHAT WE CHECK

Four site signals a GEO audit measures

Ranklyst reviews up to 12 of your most important pages as part of about 30 measurable checks, so the same pages get the same score every time.

Organization structured data

Organization markup states your name, logo and website in a format machines read without guessing.

  • Whether Organization markup is present
  • Name, logo and URL that match your site
  • Markup that matches the visible content

Profile links

Links to your official profiles help systems connect your website to the same brand elsewhere on the web.

  • Links to your official social profiles
  • Profiles that use the same name
  • Links that point to the right accounts

About, author and contact signals

These pages tell people and machines that real, reachable humans stand behind your site.

  • A clear About page
  • Author names and bios on articles
  • Easy-to-find contact details

AI crawler access

If your robots.txt file blocks an AI crawler, that assistant cannot fetch your pages to cite them.

  • Rules that block AI crawlers
  • Catch-all rules left from staging
  • Pages that crawlers can reach
THE AI RECOGNITION CHECK

See what each AI assistant says about your site

Site signals tell you what you control. The recognition check tells you what the assistants do with them. It is the part most audits skip.

  1. 1

We ask five assistants about your site

Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity each answer questions about your site, so you see where each one stands.

  2. 2

We compare every answer with your real pages

Each answer is checked against what your site actually says. A confident guess is never counted as recognition.

  3. 3

We test whether you get cited

Perplexity searches the live web, so we run real customer questions through it and show whether your pages appear as sources.

AI answers vary from day to day, so treat results as a directional signal and check again after you make changes.

Sample AI recognition result

Example data
  • Claude: Recognized
    Describes the product correctly
  • ChatGPT: Partly correct
Gets the audience right, the price wrong
  • Gemini: Unknown
    Says it has no information
  • Grok: Wrong
Confuses the brand with a similar name
  • Perplexity: Recognized
Cites the home page as a source

This is a made-up example to show the format. Your report uses your own site.

DO IT YOURSELF

How to do a GEO audit step by step

You can run this process by hand. It works, and it takes time. Use it as a map, whether you use a tool or not.

  1. 1

Ask the assistants about your brand

Open a fresh chat in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity. Ask the same three questions in each: “What is [your brand]?”, “Who is it for?” and “What does it cost?” Save every answer.

  2. 2

Compare each answer with the facts

Mark every answer as correct, partly correct, wrong or empty. A confident answer is not the same as a correct one, so check each detail against your own site.

  3. 3

Check that AI crawlers can reach your pages

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and read it line by line. Look for rules that block AI crawlers, and for a catch-all rule left over from a staging site.

  4. 4

    Add Organization structured data

Publish Organization markup on your home page with your exact name, logo, URL and links to your official profiles. Use the same name and description everywhere.

  5. 5

Strengthen your About, contact and author pages

State in plain words who you are, what you do, who you serve and how to reach you. Add real author names and short bios to articles.

  6. 6

Publish one clear page of brand facts

Give assistants a single, easy-to-read source: what you do, who it is for, how it works and what it costs. Fix every wrong answer from step 2 on this page.

  7. 7

    Test again on a schedule

AI answers vary from day to day. Repeat your questions after each change and again once a month, and treat the results as a trend, not a verdict.

What a blocking rule looks like. When you read your robots.txt file for step 3, a rule like this one stops a crawler from reading any page:

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

Crawler names change, and some companies use separate crawlers for training and for live search. Read each company’s documentation before you block or allow anything, or use the AI crawler access checker to see how your file reads today.

Ranklyst runs steps 1 to 5 for you across up to 12 pages and ranks the results. Steps 6 and 7 still need you, because only you know your real brand facts and when you have made changes.

GEO CHECKLIST

A 12-point GEO checklist you can use today

Keep this list next to your audit report. If you can tick every line, AI systems have what they need to describe you correctly.

MYTHS AND FACTS

Four GEO myths that waste your time

GEO is new, and advice online is often confident and wrong. These four claims come up most.

Myth: An llms.txt file will get me cited.

It is a proposal, not a standard, and no major AI provider has promised to use it. Clear pages and open crawler access do far more.

Myth: Blocking AI crawlers hurts my Google rankings.

Googlebot is separate. Blocking an AI crawler does not change how Google ranks your pages, but it can keep that assistant from using them.

Myth: More keywords make AI recommend me.

Assistants look for clear, accurate and trustworthy sources. Keyword stuffing makes pages harder to quote, not easier.

Myth: One test tells me where I stand.

Answers change between runs and between assistants. Test several times and look for patterns.

COMMON MISTAKES

Six GEO mistakes that keep AI from using your site

These mistakes show up again and again, even on well-built sites.

Leaving a staging block on the live site

A rule that blocks every crawler is useful before launch and disastrous after it. Re-read your robots.txt file after every release.

Trusting robots.txt alone

Some security services and CDNs block unfamiliar bots even when robots.txt allows them. If access looks open but nothing changes, check those settings.

Using different brand names across profiles

If your site, your social profiles and your directory listings use three versions of your name, assistants may treat them as three brands.

Publishing anonymous content

Articles with no author give an assistant no one to trust. Add a real name and a two-line bio to each article.

Writing a vague About page

A page full of mission language and no facts gives an assistant nothing to quote. State what you do, who it is for and where you operate.

Ignoring wrong answers

If an assistant states a wrong price or the wrong audience, the cause is usually a missing or unclear source. Fix the source, then test again.

If your pages also fail basic indexing checks, start with an SEO audit before you spend time on GEO. A page that search engines cannot reach rarely becomes a source for AI either.

WHO IT HELPS

Where a GEO audit pays off fastest

Any brand that people may ask an assistant about can benefit. These four types usually see the clearest gaps.

New brands

Assistants know little about you yet. Clear identity signals and open crawler access give them something to learn from.

SaaS and software

Buyers ask assistants for tool comparisons. A clear facts page on features and pricing keeps the answers accurate.

Local and service businesses

Customers ask for recommendations by service and area. Consistent name, address and service details help assistants describe you correctly.

Agencies and consultants

Show clients what AI says about them today. It is a new, concrete finding that opens useful conversations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GEO audit questions answered

Clear answers before you run your first audit, in English, Spanish and Roman Urdu.

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of making your website easy for generative AI systems to identify, understand and use as a source. It covers clear brand information, trust signals, structured data and letting AI crawlers read your pages.

What is a GEO audit?

A GEO audit checks how well a website is prepared for generative AI systems. It reviews your brand identity signals, your trust pages, your structured data and your AI crawler access, and it tests what AI assistants actually say about you.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO helps search engines crawl, understand and rank your pages. GEO helps AI systems recognize your brand and use your pages as a source. They overlap, because a clear, crawlable and trustworthy site helps both. Start with your SEO basics, then work on GEO.

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

AEO focuses on whether a passage on your page can be lifted out as a direct answer. GEO focuses on whether AI systems know who you are and trust you enough to use your pages. AEO is about the answer, and GEO is about the source.

How do I do a GEO audit step by step?

Ask the main AI assistants about your brand, compare each answer with the facts, check that AI crawlers can reach your pages, add Organization structured data, strengthen your About, contact and author pages, publish a clear page of brand facts, and test again on a schedule. Ranklyst runs most of these checks in one audit.

What does a Ranklyst GEO audit check?

Ranklyst checks Organization structured data and profile links, About, author and contact trust signals, and whether your robots.txt file lets AI crawlers in. It also asks Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity about your site and tests whether Perplexity cites you for real questions.

How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my website?

Ask ChatGPT what your brand is and who it is for, in a fresh chat, and compare the answer with your site. Then ask it the questions your customers would ask without naming your brand, and see whether you appear. A Ranklyst audit runs this check across five assistants and verifies each answer.

How do I get my website cited by AI assistants?

No one can guarantee a citation. You improve your chances by letting AI crawlers read your pages, stating clearly who you are, publishing accurate and current facts, showing real authors, and writing direct answers to real questions. Then test regularly and fix what the assistants get wrong.

Should I allow AI crawlers in my robots.txt file?

It depends on your goals. If you want AI assistants to know and cite your site, allow the crawlers you trust. Some companies use separate crawlers for training and for live search, so read each company’s documentation before you block anything. Blocking AI crawlers does not change how Googlebot ranks your pages.

What is llms.txt and do I need it?

The llms.txt file is a proposed convention for giving language models a short summary of your site. It is not an official standard, and no major AI provider has promised to use it. It is cheap to add, but do not expect it to change your results. Clear pages and open crawler access matter far more.

Does structured data help AI understand my brand?

It helps. Organization markup states your name, logo and official profiles in a format machines read without guessing. It works best when the markup matches your visible content and your profiles use the same name and description.

What if an AI assistant says something wrong about my business?

Publish the correct facts on a clear, crawlable page, such as your About page or a brand facts page. Make sure your profiles agree with it. Then test again after a few weeks. You cannot edit an assistant’s answer directly, so your best fix is a clear and consistent source.

Why do AI answers change from day to day?

Assistants generate answers each time, and many also search the live web. Wording, sources and even recommendations can differ between runs. Treat one result as a snapshot and look for patterns across several tests.

Will GEO guarantee that AI recommends my site?

No. Nobody controls AI answers. A GEO audit shows what is holding your site back and what to fix first, and you can run it again to check your progress.

Is there a free GEO audit?

You can check by hand. Ask the assistants about your brand, read your robots.txt file and review your About page. Ranklyst costs $2 once and does these checks for you across up to 12 pages, then ranks the fixes.

How much does a GEO audit cost?

A Ranklyst audit costs $2 per website, one time, with no subscription. The same report also includes your SEO and AEO scores.

Do small businesses need GEO?

Yes, if customers may ask an AI assistant for recommendations in your field. A small business with a clear About page, accurate facts and open crawlers can be easier for an assistant to describe correctly than a bigger site with scattered information.

Can agencies and freelancers use Ranklyst for client sites?

Yes. Each audit gives you a PDF report and a share link you can send to clients. It shows clients something new: what AI assistants say about their brand today.
